New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
A busy Freightliner terminal and loco stabling point. Located on the south west side of the Southampton to Bournemouth main line between Millbrook and Redbridge stations.
Railway type and traffic
The main line has frequent EMU and DMU services and there is also some passing freight. The main interest is the Freightliner terminal traffic and the Freightliner locos stabled between duties.

Environment
The vantage point for this location is on a busy overbridge that leads to Dock Gate 20 of Southampton Docks. There are a lot of heavy lorries as well as cars and coaches going to the docks 7 days a week. Take very great care with any children as the speed limit is 30 but it's not adhered to by most drivers! The Freightliner Terminal is on the East side of the bridge and the stabling point and Wagon Repair depot are on the west side. This location is exposed to the elements and not a great place to be in the wind and rain! The area around here is an industrial estate and therefore very busy during the week but virtually dead at weekends apart from traffic to and from the docks.
Road directions
From the M27 junction 3
Take the M271 into Southampton. Go all the way to the bottom of the M271 and turn left at the roundabout. Stay in the left hand lane (watch out for the speed camera - 50 mph limit) which takes you to another roundabout that you need to turn right at. This is signposted Dock Gate 20. Be careful this is a huge roundabout with lots of lanes and exits. The bridge is immediately in front of you down this road. DO NOT drive over it as there is a Police gate the other side preventing unauthorised people entering the docks.

Parking
During the week it's very difficult but not impossible to find parking somewhere around the area. At weekends it's quite easy as the place is deserted. Usually parking on the left as you approach the bridge is available but there is more parking down a side street to the right.
Public transport
Redbridge station is just over half a mile walk away and is served by a reasonable (every hour or so during weekdays) service from Southampton.
Walking from Redbridge station
Go out of the station and down the lane to the end and turn right. Follow this to the main road and turn right again. Follow this along until you get to First Avenue on the right. This is the road that goes over the bridge.

Amenities
During weekdays there is a mobile burger bar on the side street off the road over the bridge. This is recommended for their bacon butties! There is also a McDonald's and a KFC the other side of the main road at the last roundabout you passed on the way in. About 5 mins walk.

Photographic notes
Good views of the stabling point from the bridge as it's literally right next to / underneath you. Some locos will be partly under the bridge and some at the fueling point will be too far to see without binoculars. When the sun is low in the sky it creates some very harsh shadows. The main line is reasonably clear from the bridge but there are a few bushes that tend to get in the way a bit if you want the traditional 3/4 view.
