New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
This is an over bridge which carries the Road over the railway, to the North is the new Clay Cross North Junction. To the South the line curves gently to the West and the old clay Cross Station site.
The tracks are divided into two.
The Main Line (Network Rail definition) to the west side goes to Chesterfield and Derby so trains to the North East via Barrow Hill usually cross at this Junction.
The signals to the North automatically go to Double Amber so a green signal tells you a train is coming and Northbound trains from Derby to Barrow Hill you can hear the points change on the ladder junction, though South bound the points are too far away to hear. The signals for the Southbound trains are to South the bridge and they automatically reset to green.
The Slow Lines to the East side go to Nottingham via Alfreton and Toton or to Chesterfield by using the Chesterfield South Junction and to Barrow Hill and Doncaster for freight unfortunately.
Railway type and traffic
Passenger services are mostly Meridians and Voyagers and 158s run by East Midland Trains, Northern Rail and Cross Country. There is an occasional HST usually run by Cross Country.
Freight is run by usually DB Schenker or Freightliner there is the occasional GBRf freight and there is a single weekly Colas Freight Coal train planned.
Plus regular moves to and From Barrow Hill of DRS locos to HNRS and Preserved locos.
Environment
This is a railway bridge that is on the edge of a 30-60mph speed limit change and on the edge of a nature reserve too. The site used to overlook the concentration sidings for the now extinct Carbonisation plant and the incline which fed it. They are now the nature reserve and also provide some photography sites from footpaths which run line side.
Road directions
From the A61, Tupton:
Take the roundabout east, signed towards Graamoor. Follow this road for about a mile and you will reach the bridge. Continue up the road and turn in the entrance to Hag Hall Farm to come back to park.

Parking
There is a small lay-by to the East of the bridge.
Public transport
Stagecoach Bus Route 51 from Church Way in Chesterfield, next to the "Crooked Spire" takes you to Tupton. (approx 15 minutes journey) Alight on Queen Victoria Road at the Miners Welfare Stop. Then continue forward on foot straight on - about 5 mins walk to the railway bridge (on Bridge Street)

Amenities
A chippy is up Green Lane, turn right after the Miner's Welfare. There is also a Coffee shop on the corner of Green Lane and Queen Victoria Road. There is also a convenience shop/post office and Pharmacy on Green Lane. There is also a good pub "The New Inn" serving real ale and good food. Get off the bus at the stop just passed the pub (stop before the Miners Welfare).

Photographic notes
The Railway line runs North South and the comfortable shooting views are of Southbound trains and a side view of Northbound trains. The southern side of the bridge does not have a foot path, so you will be standing on the road with your back to traffic.
