Location notes

Situated on the East Coast Main Line 23 miles north of London Kings Cross

Railway type and traffic

A two track station situated between tunnels to the north and a viaduct to the south, sees both suburban and express traffic. Suburban passenger services by First Capital Connect 365s and Express Traffic from NXEC 91+MkIV combos, HSTs, Hull Trains Pioneers and Grand Central HSTs and 180s (August 2009).
There are infrequent freight services, but some will head south, run round at Welwyn Garden City and return north around an hour later.

Environment

The station is located in rural Hertfordshire and a fairly safe place, given the rural location staff (when present) tend not to notice photographers unless they are causing a nuisance.

Road directions

From the A1(M) northbound:-
turn off at junction 6
Take the first exit and head along the dual carriageway (B1000)
down the page to common directions

From the A1(M) Southbound:-
turn off at junction 6
Take the first exit and head along the dual carriageway (B1000)
down the page to common directions

Common Directions
At the end of the B1000 go straight across the roundabout (first exit) and up the hill. This road has traffic calming measures in place.
At the next roundabout take the first exit (left turn) and go up Station Road
When you see the railway going over the road, in about 200yards, the turning for the station car park is on your left.

Parking

The station car park is located on the west side of the station. There is also street parking close by.

Amenities

The station has a small coffee shop open during the peak hours. There are waiting shelters located on the platforms. There is a pub opposite the station called the Cowper Arms (west side) and a newsagents outside the station (east side)

The station is a high speed route with a line speed of 110mph through the station. Lighting for southbound trains is ok but due to a bank and the buildings along the east side of the station they tend to be in the shade up to the middle of the day, with

A short walk away from the station is this view from the top of the tunnel mouth. To reach here exit the station and turn left on to Harmer Green Lane, a short distance on left is some steps to a public footpath which leads to the location.
