New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
Located on the Fife circle, Lochgelly is a former mining town, on the west Fife coalfield. The station is located north of the town centre, down the brae!
From the station, looking north, the hexagonal building is Lochgelly High School (opened 1987), whilst further ahead, a cream winding tower can be seen. This is situated in the Lochore Meadows Country Park, which is well worth a visit (free admission) and their website can be found here.
Just to the right of the station can be seen the Cartmore Industrial estate. This is the former Cartmore Colliery (closed 1985). For a detailed history of Lochgelly, pop into the library in the town, where some reference books are available.
Railway type and traffic
The station is on the Fife circle, and passenger trains are provided by First Scotrail, using either class 158 or 170 DMUs. Freight consists mainly of coal trains, hauled by DB Schenker class 66's, though once the Stirling - Alloa - Kincardine line opens, in 2007, these may all be diverted.
The line is also a diversion route if the main ECML, between Kirkcaldy and Inverkeithing, is closed, and HSTs, extra 158/170's, and Virgin Voyagers, will pass through.
Environment
The station is located on the top of an embankment, and so can get quite windy or cold. The area that the station is in borders on a semi rough area, so avoid the station at nights.
Road directions
From the A92, come off at the Lochgelly turn off, and follow signs for 'Lochore Meadows Country park'. You'll then come to a roundabout with 'Weathermac' in front of you. Turn left and follow the road to the Lochgelly centre. At the mini roundabout, turn right, and follow the road down. The station will soon come into view, and the car park is on the right.

Parking
There is a small station car park, but if this is full, park in nearby streets, though park courteously. An alternative is to park in the town centre and get the bus down to the station.
Public transport
The station is served by trains of First Scotrail whilst bus services are provided by Stagecoach Fife. The service numbers that serve the station are 19, 20A, 30 and 34/A.

Important: Do not board the Lochgelly town service (numbered 20), as this doesn't serve the station. It's easy to get it and the 20A mixed up.

Amenities
The only facility is a small corner shop a little bit up the hill. All other facilities are in the town centre. The nearest toilets are in the Lochgelly Centre (free admission), and there is a cafe here, and on the corner of Auchterderran Road, whilst a co-op supermarket is on Bank Street.
There are no petrol stations in Lochgelly. The nearest petrol station is in Cowdenbeath, and the northern end of the High Street.
Accommodation
None in Lochgelly but go to the Visit Scotland website for accommodation in Fife.

Photographic notes
The view in winter is clear, as there are no leaves on the trees. However, in the summer, that may not be the case, with the extra vegetation possibly making views restricted. The station is located on the apex of a bend, and the views along the track aren't that long.
In addition, the road below is quite busy, and traffic noise will be picked up on videos. Do not video from the staircase of the Cardenden bound platform, as the stairs are the only access to and from this platform.
